What is the Youth Mobility Scheme Visa?
The Youth Mobility Scheme visa allows young people from participating countries and territories to live, work, and travel in the UK for up to two years. This visa offers incredible flexibility, allowing you to work in various roles, study, and even set up as a sole trader.
What You Can Do
- Stay in the UK for up to 2 years (3 years for Australia, Canada, New Zealand)
- Leave and return to the UK anytime during your stay
- Work in any role (except professional sports)
- Study at any institution
- Set up as a sole trader (with conditions)

Youth Mobility Visa Requirements
Basic Eligibility
- Must be between 18 and 30 years old on the date of application
- Be a national or citizen of a qualifying country or territory
- Have not used the Youth Mobility Scheme before
- Do not have children under 18 living with you or financially dependent on you
Financial Requirements
- Have at least £2,530 in savings
- Money must have been in your account for at least 28 days
- The 28-day period must be within 31 days before you apply
Fees & Healthcare Surcharge
- Application fee: £298
- Immigration Healthcare Surcharge: £776 per year (£1,552 for 2 years)
- Biometric Residence Permit: £19.20
Country-Specific Requirements
Ballot Countries (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan):
Must register interest and be selected through a ballot system. Applications open twice yearly (January & July).
India:
Must have degree-level qualification (RQF level 6) or 3 years work experience in skilled occupation. Must provide police clearance certificate.
Iceland, San Marino, Andorra, Uruguay:
Must provide criminal records certificate issued within 6 months of application.

- Valid passport with at least one blank page for visa
- Proof of nationality (passport from eligible country)
Financial Evidence
- Bank statements showing £2,530 held for 28 consecutive days
- Statements must be dated within 31 days before application
Health & Background Checks
- TB test results (if from a country where required)
- Criminal records certificate (for specific countries)
Additional Requirements for India
- •Education qualification at RQF level 6 or above

- •Invitation to apply from ballot selection
Application Process
Check Eligibility & Ballot (If Required)
Confirm you meet all requirements. For ballot countries (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, India), register your interest during the ballot period (January or July). Wait for selection notification.
Complete Online Application
Fill out the online application form. Pay the £298 application fee and £776/year Immigration Healthcare Surcharge.
Provide Biometrics
Book and attend an appointment at your nearest visa application centre to provide fingerprints and photograph. Some applicants may use the UK Immigration: ID Check app on mobile.
Wait for Decision
You should receive a decision within 3 weeks. Once approved, you can travel to the UK and begin your adventure!
After Arrival in the UK
- You can work in any role except as a professional sportsperson
- Study at any institution (some courses may require ATAS certificate)
- Set up as sole trader (max £5,000 equipment, rented space, no employees)
- Switch to Skilled Worker, Student, or other visa types before expiry
