Your Rights as a Recognised Refugee
As a recognised refugee in the UK, you have extensive rights that allow you to build a stable life. You can work in any occupation without employer sponsorship, access mainstream benefits including Universal Credit and Housing Benefit, register with the NHS for full healthcare, enrol children in school, and apply for a Refugee Integration Loan to help with housing deposits and essential items. You receive a Refugee Convention Travel Document for international travel (but must not return to your country of origin). After 5 years, you can apply for ILR (permanent residence), and after 6 years total, British citizenship. Your family can join you through the free family reunion route. These rights apply equally to those granted humanitarian protection. Our solicitors help you understand and exercise all your rights from the day you receive your status.

Settlement Requirements for Loading...
From family reunion to ILR and citizenship, each step has specific requirements. We guide you through every milestone on your settlement journey.
Family Reunion
Recognised refugees can apply for free family reunion to bring their spouse/partner and children under 18 to the UK. No income requirement applies.
Requirements:
- You have refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK
- Relationship existed before you left your country of origin
- Evidence of family relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificates)
- Children must be under 18 at the time of application
- No fee, no income requirement, no English language requirement
Free Application
Unlike the standard spouse visa (which costs thousands in fees and requires £29,000 income), refugee family reunion is entirely free with no financial threshold.
ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain)
After 5 years with refugee status or humanitarian protection, you can apply for permanent residence in the UK through the SET(Protection) route.
Requirements:
- 5 years' continuous leave as refugee or humanitarian protection holder
- Pass the Life in the UK test (£50 fee)
- English language at B1 level (speaking, listening, reading, writing)
- Not absent from UK for more than 6 months in any 12-month period
- Application fee: FREE (no fee for refugee ILR applications)
No Fee Required
ILR applications for refugees are now FREE. There is no fee to pay for settlement applications from those with refugee status or humanitarian protection.
British Citizenship
After holding ILR for 12 months, you can apply for British citizenship through naturalisation. This is the final step to becoming a full British citizen.
Requirements:
- ILR held for at least 12 months before application
- 5 years' continuous UK residence (not absent more than 450 days)
- Not absent more than 90 days in the final 12 months before application
- Good character (no serious criminal convictions)
- Application fee: £1,709 (no fee waiver available for citizenship)
Citizenship Ceremony
After approval, you attend a citizenship ceremony within 3 months, take the oath of allegiance, and receive your naturalisation certificate. You can then apply for a British passport.
Refugee Travel Document
Recognised refugees can apply for a Refugee Convention Travel Document (blue document) to travel internationally without using a passport from their country of origin.
Key Information:
- Blue travel document issued under the 1951 Refugee Convention
- Valid for travel to most countries (check visa requirements per country)
- Must NOT be used to travel to your country of origin (risks status cessation)
- Application fee applies (standard passport fee rates)
- Replaces need for country of origin passport (which you should not apply for)
Important Warning
Applying for or using a passport from your country of origin, or travelling to that country, may lead to cessation of your refugee status. Always seek legal advice before any such action.
Your Settlement Journey
From the day you receive refugee status to becoming a British citizen, here is the pathway to permanent settlement and full integration.
Receive Your Status and Understand Your Rights
When you receive refugee status or humanitarian protection, you are granted 5 years' leave to remain. You will receive a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) confirming your status. From day one, you have the right to work, access benefits, register with the NHS, and enrol your children in school. You should also apply for a National Insurance number to work and claim benefits. We help you understand all your rights and entitlements so you can start building your new life immediately.
Apply for Family Reunion
If your spouse/partner and children under 18 are still abroad, apply for family reunion as soon as possible. The application is free, with no income requirement or English test. You need to provide evidence of your relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificates) and your refugee status. Processing typically takes 12-24 weeks. Family members receive the same leave period as you and have full rights on arrival. We prepare family reunion applications and liaise with British Embassies abroad.
Integration: Work, Education, and Community
During your 5-year leave period, focus on integration. Access ESOL (English) classes through local colleges and community organisations. Find employment or start a business (no restrictions on the type of work). Apply for a Refugee Integration Loan if you need help with housing deposits or essential household items. Register children in school. Access mental health support if needed. Build community connections through local refugee support organisations, faith groups, and volunteering. This integration period prepares you for the Life in the UK test and ILR application.
Apply for ILR (Year 5)
After 5 years of continuous residence, apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain using form SET(Protection). You need to pass the Life in the UK test, meet the English language requirement (B1 level), and demonstrate continuous residence without absences exceeding 6 months in any 12-month period. The application is FREE (no fee for refugee ILR). Once granted, ILR gives you permanent residence with no further leave restrictions. We prepare your ILR application, check all requirements, and ensure everything is submitted correctly before your 5-year leave expires.
British Citizenship (Year 6)
After holding ILR for 12 months, you can apply for British citizenship through naturalisation (form AN). You need to have been resident in the UK for 5 years, not absent for more than 450 days in total or 90 days in the final year, be of good character, and intend to continue living in the UK. The fee is £1,709. After approval, attend a citizenship ceremony within 3 months, take the oath of allegiance, and receive your naturalisation certificate. You can then apply for a British passport - one of the strongest passports in the world. Congratulations on your journey.
