What is the Minister of Religion Visa?

The Minister of Religion Visa allows religious ministers, missionaries, and members of religious orders to work in pastoral leadership roles in the UK. It's designed for those serving faith communities through preaching, leading worship, and performing religious rites.

All Faiths Welcome

For ministers from all religions: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, and others recognized as genuine faith communities.

Pastoral Leadership Roles

Lead congregations, preach, perform religious ceremonies, provide spiritual counseling, and guide your faith community.

Up to 6 Years Initially

3 years initial visa, extendable for another 3 years. Further extensions possible for total up to 9 years.

Path to Permanent Settlement

Apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years continuous residence, then British citizenship after 6 years.

Bring Your Family

Partner and children can join you with full work and study rights. They also qualify for ILR after 5 years.

Charitable Organization Sponsor

Your sponsoring organization must be a genuine religious charity registered with the Charity Commission.

Support Religious Communities Across the UK

The Minister of Religion Visa recognizes the important role religious leaders play in UK communities. Whether you're a Christian pastor, imam, rabbi, Hindu priest, Buddhist monk, Sikh granthi, or minister from any genuine faith tradition, this visa allows you to serve your congregation while building a permanent life in the UK. With proper sponsorship from a registered charity and evidence of your pastoral role, you can lead worship, perform religious rites, and provide spiritual guidance to your community.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for Minister of Religion Visa, you and your sponsoring organization must meet specific criteria for genuine pastoral ministry.

Personal Requirements

  • At least 18 years old
  • Genuine desire and capability for pastoral role
  • Certificate of Sponsorship from licensed religious organization
  • Role involves primarily pastoral duties (majority of time)
  • No general grounds for refusal (criminal record, immigration violations, etc.)

Pastoral Duties Must Be Primary

Your role must involve primarily preaching, leading worship, and performing religious rites. General administrative work, teaching, or media production should be minor aspects only.

English Language (B2 Level)

Higher English Requirement

Minister of Religion requires B2 level (intermediate) in ALL four skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening. This is higher than most work visas.

B2 level equivalents:

  • IELTS: 5.5-6.5 in each skill (Academic or General)
  • Trinity College London ISE II (B2)
  • PTE Academic: 51-58 in each skill
  • Cambridge English: FCE (First Certificate in English)

Exemptions:

  • National of English-speaking country (USA, Canada, Australia, etc.)
  • Degree taught in English with NARIC confirmation
  • Previously passed B2+ English for UK visa

Why B2 Level?

As a minister, you'll be preaching, counseling, and communicating complex spiritual concepts. The B2 requirement ensures you can effectively serve your English-speaking congregation.

Religious Organization Requirements

Your sponsoring organization must be a bona fide religious charity meeting strict criteria to demonstrate it's a genuine faith community.

Organization must:

  • Have charitable status registered with Charity Commission
  • Hold valid sponsor licence from Home Office
  • Have members sharing common beliefs and spiritual practices
  • Believe in something transcendental/metaphysical/ultimate
  • Not discriminate on gender, nationality, or ethnicity
  • Receive voluntary financial support (no coercion)
  • Comply with UK laws
  • Have no detrimental impact on family life as understood in UK

Sponsor Licence Check

Not all religious organizations have sponsor licences. We can help your organization apply for the correct licence type if needed, or connect you with licensed sponsors.

Financial Requirements

Salary requirement:

  • No specific minimum, but must meet UK minimum wage
  • Same as permanent employees in similar positions
  • Appropriate for your pastoral role and experience

Maintenance funds:

  • £1,270 in savings for 28 consecutive days, OR
  • Sponsor provides financial support letter (A-rated)
  • Automatic exemption if in UK 12+ months with valid leave
  • Additional for dependents: £285 partner, £315/£200 children

Often Exempt

Many religious organizations provide accommodation and financial support, making the maintenance requirement easier to meet. A-rated sponsors can provide support letters.
